Taiheiyo Club - Gotemba West hotel
“Villa the Club”
Gotemba is a city on the southeastern side of Mt. Fuji in the Shizuoka Prefecture and a wonderful destination for many reasons. Mt Fuji, an abundance of golf courses, Japanese baths (onsens) and the sprawling premium outlet shopping area a few of the attractions that lure travellers away from the bright lights of Tokyo.
A 15 minute taxi ride from Gotemba station will have you arriving at the gates of this beautiful property which is the last part of real estate before the long slow rise up Mt Fuji.
Renovated in 2019 this hotel is best described as a retreat. The surrounding area is quiet and as you move around the property, Mt Fuji will continually pop into view above the Japanese cedars. The 1st tee of the Gotemba West course sits almost at your doorstep and the revered Taiheiyo Gotemba course only a couple of minutes away, making this hotel the perfect choice for golfers.
`Villa The Club’ is a 4 star Hotel that is attached to the Clubhouse of the Taiheiyo Gotemba West golf course. Built in the early 1990s the hotel was finished 8 years after the Gotemba West course was completed. Tiger woods, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Karrie Webb and a host of others have enjoyed the Taiheiyo hospitality that `Villa the Club’ provides. More recently Bubba Watson and his entourage stayed during their visit to play in the 2015 and 2016 Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters.
At A Glance
The Hotel is a 3 level building that houses 23 well appointed rooms, comprising 9 single rooms, 12 twin rooms and 2 suites. The suites named `333’ and `555’ are also twin rooms but are more substantial in terms of facilities and size compared to the single and twin rooms. Kitchens, dining tables and TV lounges allow these rooms to act as a retreat for larger groups staying at the hotel. It's a terrific place for groups to gather and have a few drinks before or after dinner.
Each room in the hotel has a television, free wifi, golf course and club information. The second floor has a vending machine which dispenses all types of beverages including alcohol. Both the bedrooms and bathrooms are by Japanese standards quite large and really comfortable, especially considering the recent refurbishment.
Bookings can be made up to 3 months in advance and the hotel is open more than 300 days a year. The golf courses can get snowed under in January and February so the hotel generally opens only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during this time. If the forecast allows then management will open the hotel during the week but its best to contact us first to check.
The hotel has a `Relaxation Room` that has free Wifi and also some brand new gym equipment for those who want to burn a few extra calories. Mr Nakayama is available as the in-house masseuse who does a wonderful job stretching and massaging the weary golfers. He begins at 4pm and 10pm to 11pm is his final appointment. He charges 4,950Y for 30 minutes, 7,150Y for 60 minutes and 10,450 yen for 90 minutes. You must book his services so ask at the front reception for a session.
Beside the relaxation room is an onsen or more correctly termed a ‘mineral bath` and sauna for ladies and gents (separate). Its open till midnight and the staff have assured me it has natural healing powers to relax those tired muscles. It's a great place to have a soak with your friends before or after dinner and certainly a great idea before you head off to bed. The bath is very much a part of the Japanese culture and should not be missed.
A few adult beverages is often part of a golfers holiday and they can be enjoyed only in the private confines of your room, the restaurant or bar area which is under the club restaurant. Please ensure that you don’t take drinks into the relaxation/ gym area or bath areas. Just makes it a little more comfortable for everyone and always better to respect the house rules.
Because most golfers only stay for a short time there is no facilities to wash or dry your clothes. If you do stay a few days and need to do a load of washing then its down into town for a great experience in trying to navigate the washing and drying your gear in a Japanese coin laundry. I would suggest you bring enough clothes for your trip, but if you have spent all day hitting out of the bunkers and trees you might need to wash your gear. Please don’t hesitate to ask either myself or the staff for directions to the nearest laundry.
